Soft Mexican Chicken Salad
Soft Mexican Chicken Salad
Soft phase diet after bariatric surgery
Of course, every program is different so a soft recipe might mean something else at another program (nice and confusing) so as always be sure to refer back to your programs materials.
In my experience as a bariatric dietitian, once a patient is cleared for a softer textured protein, chicken salad without chunks is a great option as you learn small bites, eating slowly and stopping at the first sign of fullness.
This recipe is a more basic chicken salad with a Mexican flavored spin. Further into the healing diet you can use thicker chunks of chicken, salsa or bell peppers. It is simple to make which means you aren’t putting a lot of time into something you cannot eat very much of!
You can, of course, increase how much you make but this recipe is a good learning recipe for the early phases of the soft protein diet. Congratulations on finishing your liquid diet!!!

Soft Mexican Chicken Salad
Ingredients
- 1 cup canned chicken, drained
- 1 tbsp light mayonnaise
- 1 tsp taco seasoning
- 2 tsp juice from jarred salsa (no chunks)
Instructions
- Place canned chicken into a bowl. Use a fork to break chicken into smaller pieces. Add mayo and stir until well combined and soft.
- Stir in taco seasoning and salsa juice. Serve.
If you use chicken you cook yourself is the protein the same or does it change I can only eat 2 oz and thought I was getting 18 on protein then saw that’s 4 oz
One ounce of chicken will have 7 grams of protein regardless of how it was prepared. I hope that helps!
