Nutrition Information:
My standard rule of thumb to approve a protein drink is for it to have 15 grams or more of protein, less than 5 grams of total carbs. Ideally it should have less than 6 grams of fat but there are times when a pre-made shake exceeds that number and may still fit a pre-op patients diet. After surgery too much fat can cause stomach upset.
This protein shake has 20 grams of protein, 6 grams of carbohydrates and 9 grams of fat. In terms of percentages that is 45% protein, 48% fat and 7% carbs.
It has enough protein, just one gram more of carbohydrates than ideal and a little higher than desired in fat.
The other thing to note is the caffeine content….which leads me to my next point:
How it might be used:
This shake is said to have “as much caffeine as a cup of coffee” and the company’s main aim with this product is to replace a sugary coffee drink from a coffee shop.
With that focus, a grande Mocha Light Frappuccino from Starbucks has 28 grams of carbohydrates, 4 grams of protein and 0.5 grams of fat.
If this shake is used to replace a sugary coffee drink, it would make a great replacement.
If you are looking for a shake for another reason, it may not be a good fit because of extra caffeine and a little higher on the fat side. It’s also important to note when it IS and is not best to have protein shakes after weight-loss surgery.
