How to Chop an Onion - 60 Second Video on Foodcoach.me for beginning cooks after weight loss surgery!

How do you chop an onion? I’m certain there are a variety of ways to chop an onion…but this is my approach. After a knife skills class in college and years of working with and around food, it’s the approach I feel is safest and easiest.

Have a good cutting board and a good knife. If your cutting board feels like it could slip, put a damp towel underneath the cutting board to secure it. Take your time, especially when you haven’t been around knives much. Keep you fingers curled in little to keep your fingertips safe- your knuckles should be a bit further out than your fingertips.

One last tip – if only need half an onion I always recommend chopping the whole thing anyway. If you already have the knife and cutting board out so finish the job! Put the rest of the chopped onion in a sealed container in the fridge. You can always toss it into eggs or a chili :)

Several bariatric patients have previous experience cooking…but maybe you’re a Sleeve or Bypass patient who is learning how to cook for the first time. Save tips like these and remember the only way to get better is practice!!
